During its Dec. 16 meeting, the Demopolis City Council approved having one polling site in the city for special property tax renewal elections in March.

Mayor Woody Collins said there will be two elections that will benefit city schools, and the polling site will have two voting areas, and each voter may cast two ballots. One election is city-sponsored, and the other is sponsored by the county.

Under new business, the council approved a request from the Demopolis Area Habitat for Humanity for $5,000 to pay for a new office. DAHH President Freddie Charleston said that the group is funded through donations, and needs a permanent place to store records, provide space for employees, and interview clients.

Charleston said the group has applied for a $350,000 grant to construct 12 houses over the next two years. If the group is successful in constructing the new homes, the homes would eliminate a portion of the manufactured housing in Demopolis.

The Finance and Budget committees were chosen to review an appraisal from Bill Mackey Realtors concerning the former Ford Dealership property. The council anticipates selling the property at the corner of Cedar Avenue and Capitol Street.

Items approved by the Council:

  • Approved Resolution 2021-18 authorizing the city to join the State of Alabama and Local Government in the Endo Settlement

The Demopolis City Council meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 5:15 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
