A long-time employee of the Demopolis City Schools Board of Education has retired after 34 years. Gina Johnson served as the Federal Programs and Curriculum Director, and her last day of work was Monday, January 31.

On last Tuesday, January 25, 2022, Johnson was given a surprise retirement party at the Central Office. Her family, friends, teachers, and administrators, including former DCS superintendent Kyle Khallhoff, applauded her for her dedication when she entered the board room.

“It speaks volumes when you can come in, and so quickly feel comfortable and see how knowledgeable someone is without them pushing it down your throat. “Gina was there. I knew she knew more than everyone, but she never tried to push it.” said Superintendent Tony Willis. “She has been a great asset who is going to be missed.”

The staff at the Central Office went in together and purchased a new rocking chair for Johnson as her retirement gift. Johnson jokingly said that once she sits down, she might not get back up.

Gina Johnson was very pleased with her retirement gift and promptly took a seat.

Johnson said that she currently doesn’t have any specific plans about what she wants to do after her retirement, but she does want to visit with her five grandchildren.
