During the August 25 Marengo County Board of Education meeting, board members heard updates from K12 Instructional Leader Wendy Joiner on topics such as dual enrollment and Summer ACAP testing for third grade.

Across the three county schools there are 87 students currently enrolled in dual enrollment. A.L. Johnson has 31 students enrolled, Marengo has 21 students, and Sweet Water has 35 students. Some of the courses being taken are English, Speech, Anatomy and Physiology, Music Appreciation, Computer Information Systems (CSI), Anthropology, and Math 100.

The summer results of third grade ACAP (Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program) have been received, and 53 percent of students tested scored on grade level. A.L. Johnson had 1 out of 5 students score on grade level, Marengo had 2 of 5 score on grade level, and Sweet Water had 5 of 5 students score on grade level. Students who did not score well will retake the test in the spring.

Under the Math Coach update, AMSTI has assigned a person to work the school system’s math coach for at least one full day every week. The Bailey Group is also supporting the coach. The Math coach is working in all three schools planning grade level meetings, coaching teachers, and planning professional development. She is also working in all classrooms with teachers to improve instructional practices.

The Attendance Office/Parent Liaison met with Joiner to discuss goals of increasing attendance and parental involvement. The importance of record keeping of daily attendance and parent communication through calls, letters, and meetings was also discussed.

The Mental Health Services Coordinator is meeting with students that have been referred to receive additional support. The coordinator has created a schedule for teaching PATH Curriculum lessons to all K-6 students in all three schools.
