Started as a modern event in 2016, Rooster Day as we know it is also a family friendly fundraising event. Instead of raising money for a bridge, however, it raises money for the Marengo County Historical Society (MCHS).

MCHS “owns and operates two of Demopolis’ distinguished landmarks, Lyon Hall and Bluff Hall. It takes a considerable amount of money, in fact the majority of our operating expenses, to preserve and maintain these two architectural gems,” the society’s website states. “MCHS is a non-profit organization that relies on membership, donations, admissions, and annual fundraisers to continue its historic preservation in Marengo County … MCHS also provides heritage education in our local schools and annual events such as Mardi Gras Ball, Derby Day, biennial Pilgrimage of Homes, Haints & Haunts, Christmas in the Canebrake, and of course Rooster Day … The funds raised at Rooster Day help make all of this happen!”

After the race, in the Rooster Fair in Public Square, explore handcrafted items from talented artists and crafters across the region. From striking photography, wooden gliders, unique pottery and silver jewelry, to all things honey and delightful baked goods, every booth offers something special. The food court will feature a lineup of local food trucks and restaurants.

Rooster Day also has a dedicated area just for children, packed with crafts, games, a petting zoo and inflatables. Enjoy live performances from local singers and musicians, including Market Street Jazz, the volunteer jazz band that always brings a smile to the crowd.

“I look forward to another great Rooster Day in historic downtown Demopolis,” Brittany Crawford, President of MCHS said. “It’s exciting to see Public Square filled with visitors of all ages. Rooster Day has something for everyone.”
