Tigers sweep Jemison to take area championship

The Demopolis baseball team has once again captured the Class 5A, Area 7 championship after sweeping Jemison in a three game series last week.
The Tigers improved to 19-9 overall, according to AHSAA, and will host Area 6 runner-up Beauregard in the first round of the state playoffs. Game 1 and 2 will be at 4 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Game 3 if necessary will be Saturday at noon.
Here is a breakdown of each of the games:
Demopolis 1, Jemison 0
In the series opener last Tuesday, Jake Powell’s RBI single to drive in Jake Bumgarner proved to be the difference in the pitcher’s duel.
Powell had two of the Tigers’ six hits. Bryant Deas also had two hits including a triple, and Jack Pritchett also had two hits in the win. Bumgarner scored thanks to reaching on one of his two walks.
Roper Houldhitch pitched a complete game gem with 11 strikeouts. He scattered four hits and didn’t have a walk.
Demopolis 14, Jemison 1
The Tigers scored 14 runs on 13 hits to clinch the area championship.
Jake Powell had a big the Tigers with a home run, a double and a single with four runs scored and three RBIs. Bryant Deas topped Powell with a 4-for-4 day including a double, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Braxton Vice and Roper Houldhitch each had two hits while Jack Pritchett and Tucker Capps also had hits.
Jake Bumgarner got the win on the mound with five strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk.
Demopolis 5, Jemison 2
In what would have been the tiebreaker game, Demopolis held on after racing out to a 5-0 lead through four innings. Jemison scored two runs in the final three innings, but Josiah Colgrove got the strikeout to end the game.
Colton Colgrove got the win with 10 strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks.
Josiah Colgrove pitched the final two innings allowing one run on one walk with three strikeouts.
Bryce McElroy had a double with two RBIs while Jack Pritchett, D’Quarius Banks, Josiah Colgrove and Jake Bumgarner all had hits.
Demopoilis 5, Sipsey Valley 0
The Tigers closed out the regular season with a win on the road Saturday.
Jake Bumgarner had a double, single, a run scored and an RBI. Roper Houldhitch also had an RBI double while Reed Schumacher, Jake Powell, Braxton Vice, Bryant Deas, Colton Colgrove, Jackson Hasty, Tucker Capps and D’Quarius Banks all had hits.
JW McAlpine got the win allowing just a hit and two walks with two strikeouts through four innings.
Pritchett pitched the final three innings with four strikeouts.
