The Demopolis City Council convened Thursday night with all in attendance.

Mayor Woody Collins began the evening with announcements, leading with a coming visit from Gov. Kay Ivey on May 2.

“This is not open to the public, it’s for the council only,” Collins said, explaining that this was simply a stop on a tour Ivey is taking with ALDOT “to places that she has donated money,” adding that it is “a very very small crowd.”

The governor will be giving a short presentation to the council at Rooster Hall at 10 a.m. before moving to her next stop. This will be her first stop in Demopolis since she attended the signing ceremony at the Demopolis Civic Center for the new Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences.

Also on the announcement list, Demopolis Chamber of Commerce will hold its open house and after hours celebration on Tuesday, April 29, from 5 to 7 p.m., and asked everyone who can to attend the event at their new office.

Moving on from announcements, Councilman Nathan Hardy presented the council with substantial data on the Broadway Street renovation, which the council agreed they would like to look over in detail before making any decisions, thus moving it ahead another meeting.

After looking over the updated ordinances that were presented last meeting, the council unanimously approved all three in one swoop. This updated the city’s policies on burning, fireworks, and fireworks stands.

The Mayor asked the council to pass the new personnel policy amendment drawn with consultation of Chief Flowers regarding paid leave for police officers.

The chamber of commerce asked for two entertainment districts for upcoming events, which were unanimously approved.
