Johnnie Jones Jr., a native of Dixon’s Mills and a student at Samford University in Homewood, had the opportunity of a lifetime when he was selected to appear in the movie “Sinners” as a background actor for the movie’s train station scene.

In November 2023, it was announced that the Dynamic Hollywood Duo Ryan Coogler (writer/director of Creed and both of Marvel’s Black Panther films) and actor Michael B. Jordan (who plays Adonis Creed and Killmonger in those films, respectively) would be teaming up yet again in 2024 to film 2025’s “Sinners” in the state of Louisiana. The plot of the movie focuses on twin brothers returning to their hometown to start again trying to leave their troubled lives behind only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

Shot on film with IMAX and Ultra Panavision Cameras, the announcement of this project conjured feelings of hope and optimism within the veins of the Deep South, particularly in the life of a young man from Alabama.

During the summer of 2024, Jones had the privilege to work with his favorite director, Coogler, who filmed the scene alongside actors Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson and newcomer Miles Caton in two locations over a course of three days. Critics have hailed the movie as a “masterpiece” that needs to be experienced in the largest theater possible.

While it was intended for IMAX screening, if that’s not possible, Jones still encourages you to get out and see it at a theater near you. Jones can be seen wearing a green suit jacket as a train station traveler, standing behind Sammie the guitarist in the movie’s second trailer (released Jan. 28 of this year).

Jones is the son of Mr. and Mrs. (Dr. Angela Moore-Jones) Johnnie Jones Sr. and the grandson of Mr. Chester and Mrs. Elnora Moore of Dixon’s Mills. He is majoring in theater with a concentration in acting and directing at Samford. He is a graduate of Marengo High School in Dixon’s Mills.
