Dorothy Louise May Simpson, known by her friends and family as “Tut”, passed away peacefully at her home in Demopolis on April 29, 2025 at the age of 92. She is strong again and is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was born August 22, 1932, in Epes, Alabama to Patrick B. and Mary E. May and was pre-deceased by her parents, an infant daughter, and her sister, Patsy.
She is survived by her husband, T.A.; her three sons, Pat and his wife Patricia “Tutu”; Tom and Marcia; and Pete and Ann. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren, Cannon, Claire, Joel, Patrick, Taylor, Kurt and Maura; as well as four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Elynor “Bunky” Harrell.
Graduating from Livingston University in 1956 with an Elementary Education degree, she chose the role of housewife and mother instead of an offered teaching position in St Augustine, Florida. She and T.A. had secretly married in 1954 while he served in the Army. Her 1956 graduation coincided with his tour of duty completion which, then, allowed them to really begin their married life together. She and T.A. lived in Marion and Uniontown prior to settling in Demopolis in 1963.
Known to be thrifty, creative, resourceful and, most importantly, not afraid of hard work, she tended a productive garden, canned vegetables, made jellies, jams and preserves. She always had an extra plate at the supper table for neighborhood friends. Several children who grew up in the neighborhood consider her their second mother. In addition to that, she made (from scratch) shirts, pants, and engraved leather belts. She was also known for her fearlessness to say what everyone else was thinking, for her pristine handwriting (resembling a work of art), and for her ability to absolutely crush any crossword puzzle.
Graveside funeral services were held at Henagan Cemetery in Epes, AL on Monday May 5, 2025 at 2:30 pm with Rev. Carl Williams and Rev. Richard Scott officiating.
Active pallbearers were Joel Simpson, Cannon Simpson, Taylor Simpson, Patrick Simpson, Kurt Simpson, and Maura Simpson.
Honorary pallbearer was Claire Stewart.
