The second Marengo County winner of The Black Belt Community Foundation’s annual William and Geraldine Curry Scholarship is Tamara Jackson of Amelia L. Johnson High School in Thomaston.
Jackson plans to attend Coastal Alabama Community College and major in Child Development. An award ceremony will be held at Amelia L. Johnson High School on Thursday, May 15 at 1:30 pm.
“This scholarship will help me accomplish my goals to become a successful servant leader in my community,” Jackson said, “I am thankful to the Black Belt Community Foundation.”
As part of her application essay, she wrote:
“As a servant leader in my community, I strive to be an example for my peers and those younger than me. For example, I am a Girl Scouts ambassador for my local troop. I teach them how to be friendly, intelligent, and responsible citizens of my community. I also participate in food drives and serve in local food banks. My grandma and I also go to the Forkland Community Center to help the elderly get food and much-needed items. In this way, I hope to inspire those around me to give back to those less fortunate. I have also shown interest in making my local community and school more appealing. In my free time, I participate in gardening and trash cleanup around my school campus and county. Moreover, I have always been passionate about helping children. I babysit and offer childcare to many mothers in and out of my family who need someone to watch their children. Childcare can be expensive, so I strive to help them by offering a cheap alternative. I plan to keep serving my community.”
The William & Geraldine Curry Scholarship recognizes high school seniors who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and commitment to serving their communities.
“This scholarship is more than financial support—it’s an investment in the future of the Black Belt,” said Felecia Lucky, CEO and President of BBCF. “We are excited to continue honoring Reverend Curry’s legacy by empowering young leaders to achieve their dreams and contribute back to their home communities after completing their education.”
