Jeremy, thank you so much for giving me an early heads up about the closing of the beloved Demopolis Times so that I could say a goodbye. I had already sent in my column for June 4th, and I can think of few more fitting columns for the closing, since it is about my late partner, Woody Dinning, Sr, who came here with his partner, Hugh Lloyd, after WW II, and they were both featured in the Times many times over the years.
I started writing columns for the Times when I moved to Demopolis to work with the Boy Scouts in 1965. Ben and Libba George were such supporters of the Scouts, and, for that matter, the whole county, and they showed it through the pages of their paper, The Demopolis Times.
I remember so well when I was playing high school football for Linden. Ben and Libba were running the times, and Goodloe Sutton’s daddy was heading up the Democrat Reporter in the county seat. Both sets of editors went out of their way to avoid hurting anybody’s feelings, almost to the point that they all hoped there would be a tie football score between Linden and Demopolis, so nobody got reported as losing.
Then, after military duty, college, law school, and practicing law about 26 years, I got to start writing weekly Days Gone Bye columns for both newspapers for the last thirty years, and what a joy it has been for me, and, I hope for my readers.
Thank you, Old Man Demopolis Times. Rest in peace.
