Montevallo used three hit batters in the bottom of the 11th inning to score a come-from behind 12-11 college baseball victory over West Alabama Tuesday at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

The win leaves the 24th-ranked Falcons 17-10, while West Alabama dropped to 16-9 in its fourth extra inning game of the season. The Tigers wasted a five-run lead after six innings.

Vinny Rodriguez started the Montevallo 11th with a single, and three hit batters latter, scored the winning run when Michael Simmons was hit by Logan Colvin. Colvin, the seventh UWA pitcher used in the game, came in for Brock Ward, who had loaded the bases by allowing the Rodriguez single before hitting two Falcons.

In all, there were nine hit batsmen in the game, five by Tiger pitchers. Ward (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Montevallo reliever Aron McRee (2-0) picked up the win, not allowing a hit or a run in two innings of work.

West Alabama struck first when Trey Williamon drove in Adam Chamblee and Tanner Rainey with a two-out single to left field in the top of the first inning. Chamblee had reached on a fielder’s choice and Rainey singled.

Montevallo wasted little time striking back, parlaying four hits and a UWA error into three runs in the bottom of the first. Big blows for the Falcons came on back-to-back doubles from Jackson Slaid and Rodriguez.

Both teams scored a run in the third inning before West Alabama exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 8-4. The Falcons got one back in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-4 after four.

Mitch Holgate doubled in Williamon and Mendez with two outs in the top of the sixth to stretch the UWA lead to 10-5. Montevallo cut the Tiger lead to 10-6 on an RBI double by Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh.

Not to be outdone by the West Alabama fourth inning, Montevallo took advantage of four hits and a wild pitch to tie the score at 11-11 after eight innings.

The Falcons loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Ward came on with two outs to strike out Slaid and send the game to extra innings.

Williamon had three hits and drove in three runs in an 11-hit West Alabama attack. Jocobby Robinson and Cockrum had two hits each for the Tigers. Mendez and Holgate drove in two runs each.

Rodriguez had four of Montevallo’s 15 hits, driving in two runs. Alex Jones, Will Fulmer and Slaid chipped in two hits apiece for the Falcons.

West Alabama returns to action Friday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
