A separate version of the July 19 report of the city’s internal investigation into a missing portion of seized drug money featured additional information from Public Safety Director Jeff Manuel.
Such actions listed would only involve the police department.
Manuel’s report concluded that the seized money was twice miscounted May 11 by officers of the Demopolis Police Department.
The Demopolis Times asked Manuel July 23 for a copy of the version of the report given to the council. Dennis Bailey, attorney with the Alabama Press Association, said releasing two reports, one for the press and one for the council, is illegal.
The report to the council is considered public information except if it is advocating criminal prosecution, Bailey said.
The report to the council is not advocating any criminal charges, Manuel said.
