Shots were fired the morning of August 20 by a male juvenile at Greene County High School in Eutaw, said Eutaw Police Chief Reginald J. Spencer.
No one was injured, he said. The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m., just as school was starting.
The suspect is in custody, Spencer said, and will be charged as an adult with "discharging a firearm in an occupied building.
Spencer could offer few details or a motive concerning the incident. He was still in the process of interviewing students and faculty at the school who were witnesses.
According to media reports, the student shot in the air. WBMA-TV reported that the shot followed an argument between students.
In addition, Spencer told one source that students were not made to go through the metal detector Tuesday.
Classes at the school continued on their normal schedule.
