More DHS athletes receive honors

Pitcher Matt Chambless and catcher Dusty Goodwin of the 2003 Demopolis High School Baseball team has received Honorable Mentions as part of The Birmingham News All-State baseball selections.

Chambless received a scholarship to play baseball with the University of West Alabama, and Goodwin received a scholarship to play football at Itawamba Community College.

During the 2003 season Chambless hit .384 with 38 hits and 99 at bats. He had seven doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 29 RBI’s (which led the team).

As a pitcher he won seven and lost three. He pitched 72-and-a third innings, gave up 66 hits, 11 walks and three 64 strikeouts. he had an ERA of 2.52.

Goodwin had a .375 batting average. He was 33 of 88. He had nine doubles, one triple, four home runs and 23 RBI’s.

Chambless and Goodwin have been starters for the Tigers baseball team for four years, said head coach James Moody. They were instrumental in leading the team. "Offensively, they were weapons for us. Both of them, at any given time, were weapons off the mound, especially Matt.

In a related matter, catcher Justin Barnes, a 1999 DHS graduate and member of the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team, was drafted in the 32nd round by the Detroit Tigers.

As a senior at DHS, Barnes had a .604 batting average. He had 59 RBI’s his senior year, which broke the school record, Moody said. "He’s a solid kid," the coach said. "…He’s one you knew would probably have a chance (at a pro career)."
