MA gets basketball season underway

The 2003 Marengo Academy Longhorns basketball season got underway this week as the Longhorns traveled to South Choctaw Academy on Monday night.

The Rebels had their way with the Longhorns and beat both the Varsity boys 53-29 and the Varsity girls 64-24.

For the girls it was No. 10 Mandy Thurber who led the way with eight points while No. 22 Emily Wiggins and No. 40 Sydney Broadway each had six points. And for the varsity boys it was No. 34 Jamie Singleton leading the Longhorns with 11 points while No. 35 Adam Cochran had eight points and No. 30 Jacob Harris had three points on the night. .

Last night the Marengo Academy Longhorns hosted the Wilcox Wildcats in Varsity Boys, Girls, and Junior Varsity Boys and Girls action in Linden.

The first match up of the evening pitted the JV girls against each other. The Wildcats had no problems moving the ball on the Longhorns’ defense. The Longhorns couldn’t handle the defense pressure the Wildcats were putting on them.

For the Longhorns it was

Sydney Broadway who lead with two points while No. 40 Heather Mathis had the other only point for the Longhorns. The Wildcats ran away with it, beating the Longhorns 29-3.

The second match up of the night involved the JV boys. The Longhorns jumped out to a 10-point lead at halftime, to slowly watch it evaporate during the second half.

The Longhorns lead throughout until the last two minutes of the game when the Wildcats evened things up at 23-23 with only 1:27 left. The Wildcats then took the lead on another two points from No. 31 and never looked back winning 29-23. The Longhorn boys were led in scoring by No. 25 Thomas Fultz and No. 32 Jacob Harris with six points each.
