UWA grabs GSC title with win

MONTEVALLO, AL- Margo Porter scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field, as West Alabama clinched the GSC Eastern Division Title with a 63-51 win over Montevallo (7-20, 4-10) on Saturday in Montevallo, Ala.

West Alabama held on to a two-point lead (24-22) at intermission, as the UWA shot 28.1 percent from the field in the first half. The Tigers outscored the Lady Falcons 39-29 in the second half for the win and to clinch the GSC Eastern Division Title.

Veronica Lee had 12 points and three steals for West Alabama, while teammate Mallorie Kerby added 11 points and five rebounds. Yolanda Thomas pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with four points and four blocks. Nikki Jones chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, six steals and three assists. Lori Smith added seven points and seven assists for the Tigers.

Laketa Riddle scored a game-high 16 points for Montevallo to go along with 12 rebounds. Janene Johnson added 14 points for the Lady Falcons, while teammate Brandi Roberts grabbed 11 rebounds and scored eight points.

The Tigers move to 21-6 overall and 12-2 in the GSC. West Alabama returns to action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the GSC Tournament (Tupelo, Miss.), as the Tigers will take on the winner of Henderson State vs. the fifth-seed from the East.
