UWA smacks Kennesaw State: Tigers show progress at plate

KENNESAW, GA -Behind an explosive offense that pounded out 23 hits, the University of West Alabama baseball team took a single game from Kennesaw State (17-11) by the score of 19-6 on Wednesday afternoon.

Shane Martin (2-0) picked up the win for the Tigers, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing one earned run on three hits. Blake Whitaker (1-1) took the loss for the Owls, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Tigers had eight players with multiple hits in the game. Brandon Boles went 4-for-6 with a home run, a double and three RBI for the Tigers. Randal Minton added four hits, including a triple, two doubles and two RBI. Dustin Roberts went 2-for-4 with a home run, one double and four RBI for West Alabama. Stephen Waggener added three hits, three RBI and two doubles, while Jonathan Lindsey added three hits, including a double and one RBI.

Scott Needs had two hits, including a solo home run for UWA. A.J. Ray had two hits, while Rafael Farrell added two hits, including a double, two stolen bases and one RBI.

Wes Newsome led the Owls with three hits, including two doubles and three RBI on the day. Ryan Perry and Brett Campbell added two hits each for Kennesaw State.

West Alabama moves to 18-11 overall and returns to action on Thursday when Miles College comes to Livingston for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
