Three local tax return preparation&filing agencies Baber’s Tax Service, H&R Block of Demopolis, and Suburban Express Tax Service have all experienced a rush in customers due to people procrastinating until the last minute. Well guess what folks, this is the last minute-Thursday, April 15,2004.

The manager of Baber’s Tax Service Anthony Aldridge said they always have a lot of people come in at the last minute and that this year was no exception. He also said if they don’t file by 12:00 p.m. Thursday night, then they must apply for an extension.

“The extension gives the person some extra time to get there taxes together, but not without a price,” Aldridge said.

The manager of the H&R Block of Demopolis Kate Allinder said they’ve also had a lot of customers coming in trying to get their taxes done before Thursday’s deadline. She also said that a funny thing happened the other day at the store.

“A guy walked in and asked if we took procrastinators, and I told him sure come on in and have a seat,” Allinder said.

She said the people who don’t file by Thursday night must get an extension, if they plan to file their taxes this season. There will be penalties attached to the return if they end up owing money to the government, but those who get money back will face no penalties.

“You can file your taxes as far back as three years,” Allinder said.

The manager of Suburban Express Tax Service Eddas K. Easley said a lot of people have been coming in at the past few days. She also said, “We always have last minute returns coming in.”

“People coming in late just comes with the terroirty of doing tax returns,” Easley said.

Many of the United States Postal Offices around the Demopolis Times’ five county coverage area are not going to expand their hours Thursday to allow for last minute tax returns.
