LIVINGSTON-A convicted rapist escaped from the Sumter County Jail on Thursday, June 10 for little over two hours.
Sumter County Chief Deputy Eddie Larkin said Charles Edward Allen, 18, of Epps assaulted one of the detention officers and escaped from the jail around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday. He also said with the assistance of the Livingston Police Department, they started searching for the convicted felon after the word got out about the escape.
“Allen was in custody by 7:19 p.m.,” Larkin said, “He only made it about half a mile in two hours time.”
He said once Allen was back in the jail, he had two more charges added to his record for this escape attempt. Allen received a charge of Escape first degree and a charge of assault second degree.
