DEMOPOLIS – “Let’s put this thing away,” Demopolis 9&10-year old All-Star William Stewart said as he raced out of the dugout Friday night to start the bottom of the sixth inning.
Two outs and two runs later with the tying run at third, Stewart did just that. He put the game away for Demopolis as he caught a game-ending pop fly to give the Demopolis All-Stars a 7-6 win over Thomasville.
The Demopolis 9&10-year old All-Stars entered into Friday night’s Game 1 of the Area 4 South Tournament not having played a game since June, but the wet afternoon weather held off Friday long enough to get a game in, but it would have to be played in Demopolis.
Mother nature would be the only winner at this week’s Dixie Youth 9&10-year old Sub-District Tournament in Livingston, as heavy rains poured over Jaycee Park for three consecutive days this week, allowing Demopolis, Sumter and Butler into the area 4 tournament.
Friday, Demopolis would get things started by collecting two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. But Thomasville would answer back with two runs of their own to tie it up at 2-2 after three complete.
In the fourth, Demopolis would open the victory doors scoring five unanswered runs to take a 7-2 lead. Thomasville (0-1) would slowly scratch their way back to pull to within three, as they collected one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to make it a 7-4 game.
Thomasville would hold off Demopolis in the top of the sixth and have an opportunity for the come from behind win. But Stewart would end that opportunity with his sixth inning catch as Demopolis (1-0) moves into the winners bracket.
With the win, Demopolis will play the winner of Friday night’s Game 2 Butler/Monroe County match-up Saturday night at 7 p. m. Thomasville falls into the losers bracket and will play the loser of Game 2 Saturday night at 5 p. m.
All games will move back to Jaycee Park starting Saturday.
