DEMOPOLIS-Demopolis maybe ready to move on up too those deluxe apartments in the sky come next April. A development company from Gadsden is in the process of acquiring land on Hwy. 80.

Bill Mackey, owner of Bill Mackey and Associates is currently in negotiations with Olympia Development from Gadsden to purchase four acres of land behind his current business on Hwy. 80. The current plan by Olympia is to take these four acres of land and build an apartment complex.

“These 40 apartments will be better than any currently in Demopolis,” Mackey said.

They will mostly be two bedroom apartments with some handicapped accessible ones as well. These apartments will be for the working people of Demopolis, he said.

“They will be looking to acquire an Alabama Housing Grant,” Mackey said.

They will hopefully close on the land in September as well as start construction. The apartments should be ready for April of 2005, he said. There will be a community house for the residents of the apartments to gather for events.

“This will be a very good project for the continued growth for the City of Demopolis,” Mackey said.

Project Manager for Olympia Development Butch Richardson said they were still in the preliminary stages of the designs and still trying to acquire the land, so he didn’t want to make any comments about the project.
