DEMOPOLIS- The Demopolis Dixie Belles 13-15 year-old All-Stars placed fourth in the state championship tournament in Enterprise. The Belles finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and also won the Sportsmanship Award.
Demopolis faced Muscle Shoals in its first game and was soundly beating 10-1. Corey Gross scored the only run for the Belles during the game on a walk.
The bats were silenced during the first game loss, but in their second game the Belle’s bats laid the smack down on the pitcher of North Chilton. The Belles won the second game in five innings by a score of 17-1, thanks to every member of the team having an RBI during the game.
Katie Simmons led the way with 4 RBIs, and Dorothy Knapp&Shawnesee Armstead each had 3 RBIs for the Belles. The Belles’ luck continued into their third game of the tournament against Dothan.
They defeated Dothan by a score of 7-5 thanks to the clutch hitting of Courtney Willingham, who had 2 RBIs for the Belles in the win. This win would setup the Belles to face the host team, Enterprise.
The Enterprise team would prove to be the final team that the Demopolis Belles would play in this tournament, after losing by a score of 4-1. Katie Simmons would score their only run during the defeat. After this very successful showing in the state championship, the future of women’s softball looks mighty bright in the City of Demopolis.
