DEMOPOLIS – The final event on Thursday marked the end of another successful year of the Summer Reading Program for the Demopolis Public Library.

The director of the Demopolis Public Library Lindsy Gardner said she thought this year’s program was very successful and the official number of how many books the children read during the program will be announced next week. It has to be more than last year, for sure because the circulation was up in June over last year’s numbers.

“This was the first year we’ve held preschool events and the parents really responded well to the events,” Gardner said, “So much so, that we are going to add a preschool story time for the children as well.”

This program just continues to grow and grow each year. The children are reading more and more books every year and as the director nothing is more important to me than seeing the children reading and enjoying books, she said.

Kim Witherspoon, Children’s Librarian has helped with the program all summer long and this marks her second year helping with the events. During my first year, it was tough because the children just ran over me and it wasn’t a very enjoyable time for me, but this second time has been totally different.

“I loved being a part of the Summer Reading Program and watching the children enjoy the many different activities that were available during the program,” Witherspoon said.

The program will only continue to get better and better every year and with the help of the parents of Demopolis, the library will continue to grow.
