DEMOPOLIS – The city council’s agenda didn’t take too long to cover, with the only action coming when the council passed the minutes of the previous meeting.

Those minutes were passed unanimously.

City Attorney Rick Manley briefed the council on the status of a piece of property targeted for clean up in the city.

He told the council that the Willie Bingham property at 1113 Arcola Rd.

would take more time to investigate due to locating heirs in the property.

“We’ll need an affidavit of the heirs in this case,” he told council members.

He expected to be in a position to present a resolution for ordering the property cleaned up by the council’s next meeting in two weeks.

Public Safety Director Jeff Manuel told council members that two new police recruits have been hired in the police department, and they will be attending the law enforcement training academy in Selma.

Fire Chief George Davenport informed council members that he expected the downtown fire station to relocate within two weeks.

The station is being moved to a temporary location while the West Alabama Transportation Center’s building is renovated into a public safety complex.

Once complete, that complex will house the fire station, the police department and the municipal court.

Mayor Austin Caldwell asked council members their preference for canvassing the votes and certifying the municipal election.

“We can meet after the votes are counted, or the following day,” he said.

Council members decided to meet at 8 a.m. Aug. 25 to certify the election returns.

Absent from the meeting was Olympia Development representative Butch Richardson who was scheduled to answer council questions regarding the company’s plans to develop an apartment complex on U.S. Highway 80 West.

Council members said they were concerned that the complex would be income-limited housing rather than a standard apartment complex, which was the understanding.

Caldwell said Richardson asked to be at the next council meeting.
