DEMOPOLIS – The River City Soccer Club’s 2004 season is in full swing and with it comes the smiling faces of five-year olds with no idea of the game’s score as they try to keep the ball going the right way down the field and their parents screaming in glee.
With more than 200 children from the ages of five to 18 playing soccer this year, it looks as though soccer in Demopolis is back on the raise after a slight decline in the past. There are six different divisions that are currently in action right now at the Demopolis Sportsplex. The under six or U-6 league consists of eight teams with six players each. The eight sponsors for the U-6 teams are WZNJ-106.5, Alabama, Cemex, Community Bank, Smokin’ Jack’s, Hudgens’ Insurance. The U-6 league plays every Tuesday or Thursday at 5:30pm at the Demopolis Sportsplex.
Patrick Ellis, who is a board member of the River City Soccer Club said about the season so far, “This is my first year coaching the U-6 and I can’t believe how much fun it is,” “I would recommend any parent looking to spend a little extra with their child, should come and play soccer.”
The other five divisions are U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, and U-18. There are only two teams in the U-18 league. AA Pre Employment and Wallace Woods sponsor the teams.
They play their games on Monday nights at 6:30pm at the Demopolis Sportsplex. Ellis, who also coaches a team in this division said, “The two teams are very evenly matched and play very good soccer while on the field,” “We are hoping to make some improvements, so we can make a good showing at a soccer tournament somewhere in the state.”
