EUTAW – A four-year-old case is finally coming to an end thanks to the wonders of DNA.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Johnny Lee “Buckwheat” Brown on the charges of rape and robbery. Brown is already serving time for convictions of possession of stolen property and escape.
In December 2000, a young woman was robbed and raped on Interstate 20/59 north of Boligee. She had stopped to take a nap on her way back to school in Georgia when a man broke the window in her car while she was sleeping inside. He entered the vehicle, robbed her of $22 and then raped her at knifepoint. There were no suspects at the time of the incident.
When Brown was jailed on the other counts, his blood was taken and his DNA was put into the national database.
As luck would have it, the DNA recovered from the rape now had a match. Sheriff Johnny Isaac intends to serve the warrant Nov. 2.
“I believe that the suspect will plea out,” said Sheriff Isaac when asked if the victim would have to appear at trial. “The victim now lives in New York and should not have to return,” said Isaac.
