After a thorough interviewing process the Demopolis City Council named their new city clerk Thursday. After adjourning into executive session the council voted unanimously to hire Carla Cowling as the new city clerk for Demopolis.
Demopolis Mayor Cecil P. Williamson said after much discussion the council was now ready to make their choice public.
Cowlings history in Demopolis and strong leadership skills made her an easy choice for the council.
Williams said after looking over Cowlings resume and discussing the situation with the council they were ready to act. Williamson said she has no doubts cowling will be able to step into the job and perform well. The council felt the same way.
Cowling was elected to the duties of city clerk as a replacement for ousted clerk Vickie Taylor. Taylor was relieved of her duties on Oct. 7 when after reporting for work around 8 a.m. she was escorted from the building. At the time Taylor was informed that she had been placed on administrative leave. Taylor has reportedly filed suit against the city.
Taylor was hired in 1986 by the city of Demopolis to serve as an accounts payable clerk. She was appointed city clerk in 1996 and had served in that capacity ever since.
Paula Rich had assumed the role of acting city clerk prior to Cowlings Thursday hire.
