Cougar’s Davis wins ‘lineman of the year’

Wes Davis, a 6-4, 310-pound senior offensive tackle for Southern Academy, was named the AISA Lineman of the Year on Wednesday night.

Davis averaged 373 rushing yards per game for the Cougars and was the top blocker for the AISA Class A state champions.

Mathis named ‘player

of the week’ at UWA

University of West Alabama senior Ty Mathis, a native of Gadsden, Ala., was named the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division Player of the Week for the period ending on Dec. 14. This marks the second time this season that Mathis has earned this honor, as he also was named Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 22.

Mathis led the Tigers to two wins this week over Southern Arkansas and Stillman, pushing the current UWA win streak to four games. Against SAU, Mathis scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. He then had a team-high 20 points against Stillman to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds. For the week, Mathis connected on 12-of-18 shots (66.7 percent), while averaging 16 points per game.

He is currently scoring a team-best 17.9 points per game to go along with a team leading 7.0 rebounds per game.

The Tigers are currently 6-4 on the year and continue action on Jan. 3 when they travel to face William Carey with the tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
