Everyone loves a good vacation, whether it’s sunning on the beach or climbing in the mountains. But since not everyone is allowed that luxury, the ARCs of Fayette/Lamar and Marengo Counties will spend this weekend trying to make that luxury a reality for some very special people.
ARC will host a fundraising fishing tournament this Saturday, April 30, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the banks of the City Landing.
ARC is a private, non-profit agency that provides residential, day habilitation and supported employment to adults with mental retardation and other related developmental disabilities. This year, ARC wants to take these people on a “real” vacation, according to Program Director Wade Reese.
“The ARC currently serves 18 individuals in seven community homes here in Demopolis,” Reese said. “The fundraiser will assist those in the community homes offset the expense of a real vacation.”
Registration fee for the Saturday event is $20 and can be paid at the Arc building at 115 W. Washington Street or at the event that day. Prizes will be awarded for the fish that weighs the most.
“First prize is $250, second place receives a fishing rod and reel and third place will receive a barbeque grill,” Reese said.
Arc plans to make the fishing tournament an annual event, to serve the dual purposes of raising money and raising awareness.
“The annual event will allow more awareness in the community that there are possibilities for those with developmental disabilities,” Reese said. He said Arc already proves that daily with its community homes and thrift store that serves as a day habilitation training center.
There is no age limit, but children must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must have a valid fishing license and must fish from the banks. For more information, contact Reese at (334) 287-0500.
