Greensboro PD makes another bust

A drug sting in Greensboro has resulted in one arrest already and will likely lead to more, says officers with the Greensboro Police Department.

Roosevelt Smith, 28, of Greensboro has been arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. He has not posted bond and is currently being held in Hale County Jail.

Smith was arrested following a weekend police raid on a residence located on Greensboro’s Blount Circle. During the raid, officers seized more than an ounce of crack-cocaine, a pair of illegally altered shotguns, two unregistered pistols, and several items of drug paraphernalia, such as digital scales.

According to Greensboro Chief of Police Claude Hamilton, the raid was the culmination of several weeks of investigative work on the part of the Greensboro PD. The investigation began after several Greensboro residents had contacted the Department with complaints of drugs being dealt in and around the Blount Circle neighborhood.

In response to the complaints a “confidential informant” paid an undercover visit to the residence. After confirming that “the subject did have a good quantity of drugs,” Greensboro PD contacted the area’s Drug Task Force and the Hale County Sheriff’s office. Working in conjunction with those groups, Greensboro PD obtained a search warrant and officers raided the residence.

Hamilton promised that Smith would not be the only individual arrested for their role in the drug operation, with other warrants likely to be served this week.

“This is more evidence,” Hamilton said, “that we’re getting more people who are trying to bring drugs into our community. And we’re not going to tolerate it.”

Hamilton said the willingness of Greensboro residents to alert the Department was what made the sting successful.

“It shows that we have the confidence of the citizens,” Hamilton said. “They’re willing to talk to us. They trust us again. That’s what started this, the contributions of the citizens.”

The raid marks the second successful drug sting for the Greensboro PD in only a two-week period, following a May 5 raid that resulted in the confiscation of thousands of dollars worth of cash, drugs, and other stolen goods.
