DEMOPOLIS-Representatives from the American Red Cross came before the Demopolis City Council Thursday night to urge them to spread the word about the city’s July 14 blood drive throughout their district. Red Cross representative Rhonda Dodge told council members they had lofty goals for this years drive and were especially motivated because of a national shortage.

“There is a blood drive that you are going to host here in Demopolis on July 14 here at city hall and this is a critical time,” Dodge said. “Summer is always a critical time for the blood supply here in America. We have been seeing it even more so lately.”

Dodge said they were seeking to boost the supply with multiple drives this summer and hoped for great participation in the Demopolis drive.

“The blood supply is at an extremely urgent level,” Dodge said. “They have asked us to have at least a three day supply and that is what we are shooting for.”

As it stands the blood supply is in desperate need of a boost. Dodge said the drive at Demopolis City Hall was a great start and she appreciated the city’s help.

“The numbers show extremely scary and shocking facts that we are not only seeing that in our region, but nationwide,” Dodge said. “What you guys are doing here in Demopolis is a wonderful thing and we would like to thank you very much.”

The goal for the Demopolis drive was 30, which meant they would need about 50 people to come through. She said that would mean each council member could bring 10 people from their district and the goal would be met.

Dodge said giving blood could be the difference in life or death for its recipient.

“Every unit of blood given can save the life of two people,” Dodge said. “That can be the difference in life and death and it can be a very good return on an investment of 45 minutes of time.”
