Legion juniors drop two to Trussville

DEMOPOLIS–A late rally fell just short of earning the West Alabama American Legion junior baseball team a split in a Saturday double-header against Trussville.

After losing the first game 15-5 to the visitors from Jefferson, Post 29 faced a 9-6 deficit entering the seventh and final inning before rallying to shave the Trussville lead to a single run. But that tying run could not be pushed across and West Alabama suffered a sweep in the twin bill, falling 9-8.

Despite the losses, several of the Post 29 players had solid days at the plate. Randy Martin totaled four hits in the double-header, including a double, and scored four runs. Brent Bonner did him one better in the hits column with five, and Chase Felts added two extra-base hits, two singles, and two runs scored. Patrick Castleman had a pair of hits in game 2 as West Alabama tried to rally.

Castleman and Martin got the starts in game 1 and game 2, respectively, with a solid three-inning relief performance from Felts in game 2 helping set the stage for Post 29’s late push.

With the following day’s game against West Blocton cancelled thanks to hurricane Dennis, the games against Trussville concluded the regular season for the Post 29 juniors. Despite the losses, the team finished the season with a winning record. West Alabama will now look forward to the District Tournament, to be held at Tuscaloosa Academy beginning this Thursday afternoon.
