DEMOPOLIS-For those who missed Monday’s Marengo Idol deadline there is good news. The deadline has now been extended until Monday July 25.
The contest itself will take place Saturday Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. in the Demopolis Middle School gym.
Though there is still time to register the contest has already exceeded last years entries. Marengo Idol organizer Wayne Kirk said they are close to 10 contestants and expect more to come over the weekend.
“We have nine ready to go,” Kirk said. “There is still time for others to register, but we have nine paid up for now.”
Entertainment is also planned throughout the afternoon. Kirk said they have a wonderful person who has stepped up to arrange the entertainment for the evening.
“We have miss Arletha Perry working on entertainment,” Kirk said. “She is taking care of that and handling all that.”
Dancers and singers will keep the crowd into the program throughout the contest along with a very special guest. An Elvis impersonator from Linden will also be on hand. The impersonator is guaranteed to add a little fun to the event.
Entries must be between 16 and 28 years of age to compete. Acts will be solo with no rap music. Appropriate dress is required and no explicit lyrics or profanity will be allowed. Songs must be three minutes or less.
The winner of the contest will receive a trophy from the Gold Mine and will be sponsored by the Marengo County Idol Association to audition for the next American Idol contest.
Sponsorship includes travel and lodging for four nights. Meals will be the responsibility of the chaperone and contestant.
A nonrefundable entry fee of $20 is required for all contestants and applications are available at Demopolis City Hall, the Smart Shopper, Pizza Hut and Captain D’s.
Tickets will be $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
