HALE COUNTY-Hale County Sheriff Larry Johnson was called out of his office Thursday to cover a shooting on Alabama Highway 60.

According to Johnson, Percy Nelms was shot in the back of his neck midday Thursday as he was traveling north on 60.

“He said someone was driving behind him and shooting at him,” Johnson said. “He was conscious and talking to me when I got there.”

As of Friday, Johnson said Nelms is in “fine condition” because he received a phone call from the victim to talk about the incident.

Johnson said he doesn’t know much about the cause of the shooting but said there has been an ongoing problem with Nelms and some people in the area.
