UWA holds coaches’ clinic for Science Olympiad

LIVINGSTON-

The University of West Alabama is inviting students in grades three through six to participate in the University of West Alabama’s 2005 Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament on Nov. 12. Before this event, the University will also hold a coaches clinic on Saturday Sept. 10 to introduce the events for the tournament and to help coaches, who are mostly teachers, parents and other volunteers, develop a better understanding of all the events along with strategies for their classroom implementation.

Ten professional development hours will be offered to teachers that participate in both the tournament and the Coach’s Clinic. The clinic will be held at the ALFA Center in Livingston from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Alabama Power will be giving a presentation to teachers about a new science program they are promoting. Teachers are encouraged to come out an explore all the opportunities that will be offered.

Registration for each team will be $30 for what is called the Division A-2 category (grades 3-6).

After registration has been received a Science Olympiad Coach’s Manuel Rule book will also be sent so teams can get started,

The purpose of the coaches meeting is to prepare for the main event, which will take place on Nov. 12. On this date the Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament will be held. The tournament, which is a national non-profit organization is designed to improve student interest in science and math. Alabama has ranked in the top 10 in the nation in participationin the SO tournament in the past few years.
