“It is the heart of the town and the county,” said Sarah Lee, secretary of the Eutaw Area Chamber of Commerce.

Lee is referring to the historic courthouse square in Eutaw which is currently undergoing complete restoration.

The city of Eutaw and the Chamber of Commerce were awarded $10,000 Thursday by the Alabama Power Company Foundation to specifically aid in the restoration of the square’s fountain.

After acquiring nearly $700,000 in federal aid, half of which the city is required to match, Lee said they are looking for funds that do not require matching.

“We want to preserve the history,” Lee said, “by allowing residents and tourists the opportunity to step back into the past.”

The city’s next project is to replace the roofs and repaint the exteriors of the square’s four buildings.

Lee said they are currently in search of grants from private foundations, and they are always accepting donations.
