Demopolis Building Committee looks at Public Safety building possibilities

DEMOPOLIS-In Tuesday’s meeting of the Demopolis Building Committee the topic of conversation centered around whether to recommend the Demopolis City Council stay with their current architect on the construction of the new Public Works building or consider other options.

The current plan calls for Brown Design to continue working on the project. However, the obligation with the company has been satisfied. The board discussed whether it would be beneficial to recommend at Thursday’s council meeting they stay with Brown Design or seek other options.

The alternatives presented included putting the project out for Request for Performance or seeking information from other companies as to their plans and time constraints with the project.

Demopolis Police Chief Jeff Manuel it was not so much a matter of who did the project as it was getting it done.

“That really does not matter as much as getting the project completed,” Manuel said. “We are more concerned with getting the project done than anything.”

Building Committee member Charles Jones said he felt they would be better served to stick with the company already working on the project.

“I would just as soon stay with them as long as they are working on the building,” Jones said.

Demopolis Mayor Cecil P. Williamson said they had three choices to choose from to present to the council and needed a decision in place.

“We need to be ready to make a recommendation to the council,” Williamson said. “Our questions are whether to RFP it, go with another group or stick with what we have.”

In the end the committee voted to go with this idea and recommend to the council the city stay with Brown Design for now. However, the final decision will come from a council vote at their Thursday meeting. The council will meet Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at Demopolis City Hall.
