Southern blasts WAP 81-0

DEMOPOLIS-The Southern Academy Cougars kept their winning streak alive last night as they rolled past West Alabama Prep 81-0.

The Cougars had to work for their first score grinding out a seven play 59-yard drive. Quarterback Nathan Bonds found Matthew Rutherford behind Titan defenders to get the Cougars on the board with a 21-yard strike. The extra point by Andy Wheeler was good making the score 7-0 Southern with 8:24 remaining in the first.

From there the Cougars took advantage of a Titan turnover to regain the ball at the WAP 28 setting up a short Wallace Drury touchdown run. The PAT was again good making the score 14-0 Southern with 6:38 to go in the first.

Drury would add two more scores before the end of the first quarter. On the Cougars next two possessions Drury found pay dirt from short and long distances with runs of five and 33 yards. A missed PAT on the last score left the Cougars with a 27-0 lead as the first quarter expired.

The Cougars first score of the second quarter would be the same man from a different side of the ball. Drury stepped in front of a titan pass and raced down the sideline 62 yards to pad the Cougar lead to 33-0. The PAT was good making it 34-0 with 10:45 to go in the half.

On their next drive the Cougars got some fresh players into the game and went to the air. After getting short field Jason Lavender would haul in a 19-yard pass to raise the lead to 40-0.

The Cougars would then turn another Titan turnover into points as Chad Milner found the end zone from 3 yards out to make the score 46-0 late in the half. The PAT was good again making the score 47-0.

The Cougars capped their first half scoring on their next drive when Charlie Lee sprinted up the middle 57 yards to make the score 53-0. The PAT was good giving Southern an 81-0 lead heading into the locker room.

The Titan defense stiffened in the third quarter making the Cougar offense work for every yard. But it would be the defense for Southern that would score their first points of the half.

The titan began to move the ball through the air, however, on the sixth play of their drive Jason Segura stepped in front of a Titan pass and returned it all the way for 63 yards and a score. The extra point made it 61-0 with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter.

Drury added his final points of the game on the Cougars next drive as he carried the ball 51 yards on the first play for a score. The extra point was good again making the score 67-0.

Segura got his first offensive touchdown of the night as he hauled in a pass for 27 yards to up the score. The extra point was good again making the score with 10:10 remaining in the game.

The Cougars ended their scoring when Christian Montz carried the ball 43 yards up the middle for the score. The extra point was good making the final score 81-0.

Southern (7-0) will try to keep their unbeaten streak alive as they host Cornerstone next Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
