DEMOPOLIS–T-minus one more week.

The Demopolis Tigers continued their march into the postseason with their 24th consecutive win, 55-0 over the visiting Greene Co. Tigers Friday night.

The win moves DHS to a perfect 9-0 on the season and completes a fourth straight undefeated run in 4A regional play. Greene Co. falls to 2-6 on the season and wraps up their regional schedule at 2-5.

The Demopolis defense posted their sixth shutout of the season, but it took another of the Tigers’ frequent first-quarter goal line stands to pull it off. On the visitors’ first possession of the game, Greene Co. quarterback Robert Jones hit junior receiver Aundre Woods for a long completion down to the Tiger 1-yard line. But Greene Co. was stuffed on first down, Jones threw incomplete on second, and runs on third and fourth down got GCHS no closer than the Demopolis 2 and the game remained scoreless.

It would stay that way until 4:43 remaining in the half, when Demopolis finally broke through with an eight-yard run by Rock Jones. Justin Davis would kick the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Demopolis would end the half with a bang. Tiger QB Dontrell Miller dashed his way in from seven yards out with 1:17 remaining in the half, and despite a miss by Davis the Tigers weren’t done yet. The Demopolis defense forced a turnover and on the final play of the half, Miller hit wideout Giorgio Griffin with a 31-yard scoring strike. Jones carried in for the two-point conversion and DHS went to the locker rooms with a commanding 21-0 lead.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as Jones scored his second TD of the night, rumbling in from 11 yards out.

On Demopolis’s next possession, Miller hit Brad Braxton for a 21-yard completion to the GCHS 11 before Calvin Bryant went left for a two-yard score on fourth-and-goal. Davis’s extra point was good and DHS was up 35-0.

The third quarter would end at that score, but not before Greene Co. would move into DHS territory with a 31-yard pass from Jones to Alvin Brewer. Demopolis was ready for Jones’s next deep pass, however, and Miller made a third-down interception at the DHS 12.

The fourth quarter became the Dwiuan White show as the senior receiver would score his 12th and 13th touchdowns of the season. The first came on an end-around as White juked his way past a Greene Co. defender and streaked down the right sideline for a 52-yard score and a 42-0 lead. After Demopolis held GCHS to three-and-out on the visitors’ next possession, White scooped up the bouncing punt and again broke away down the right sideline, 69 yards this time to put the Tigers up 49-0 with 7:11 left in the game.

Demopolis wasn’t quite finished as hard running by Bryant and Jacob Smelley set Smelley up for an easy 1-yard walk into to the end zone and a 55-0 victory.

As with most games in 2005, Demopolis dominated the line of scrimmage and the ground game. DHS–led by Jones’s 130 yards on 18 attempt–rolled to 379 rushing yards on 41 carries, a 9.2 yards-per-carry average. Demopolis also held Greene Co. to 68 rushing yards on 32 carries and 132 total yards of offense.

Demopolis will look for their 40th straight regular season victory when they finish the season on the road next week at 1-7 Greenville. Greene Co. will travel to Butler to take on 1-7 Choctaw Co.
