Habitat turns dream into a ‘real house’

DEMOPOLIS – As Lavon Blount watched volunteers strategically place shingles on her Habitat homes’ roof, her fantasy turned reality.
“It’s all setting in for me now that this is happening,” she said. “It’s looks more like a real house.”
With the insulation up and electrical wiring running through the home, Blount’s house moved another step closer to becoming a home as volunteers completed their fifth Saturday of work.
According to Habitat organizer Frank Charleston, the home is continuously progressing.
“It went rather well Saturday,” Charleston said about the day’s shingle work. “We got it blackened in, so we’ll at least keep the weather out.”
Charleston said the next step is to add windows, finish the roof and get some work done in the bathrooms.
He also said volunteers are soon to put up siding and sheetrock.
As always, both volunteers and monetary donations are welcomed.
When making a donation, contributors are asked to specify whether they want all the money to go directly to Demopolis Area Habitat for Humanity.
On behalf of the Demopolis Habitat committee, Charleston also said he would like to thank the volunteers and financial supporters for their continuous help and funding.
Although it seems the home is almost complete, Charleston said volunteers have more than a few weeks of work ahead of them.
“We have several more weeks,” Charleston said. “But we’re looking at making this a good Christmas present for Lavon.”
