DEMOPOLIS – Demopolis residents only have a few more weeks before the biggest merchant in town becomes super.

Although the Livingston Wal-Mart is closing its doors, the Demopolis’ Wal-Mart Supercenter is expected to open in late January.

“We are closing Jan. 24,” short-term Livingston store manager Marguerite Foster said.

“We’ll be open Jan. 25,” Demopolis store manager John Whitehead said.

This will be the second big move for the Demopolis branch since its opening more than 20 years ago. The first location was where the Heritage Mart now stands on Highway 80 East. Currently, Wal-Mart is located at 505 Highway 80 West and is planned to move to a new building a few miles west on the city’s main highway.

“I’ve been working at Wal-Mart in Demopolis for 23 years,” Wal-Mart employee Shirley Anderson said last week. “First we were down there, now we’re here, then we’ll be up there. We just keep moving down the road.”

The Supercenter is expected to have a vision center, grocery center, auto-care facility, beauty salon, arcade and eatery.
