Roundup: Sumter, Hatch post big wins

Sumter Co. 54, Greene Co. 45

Sumter Co. continued their undefeated streak to start the season with a 54-45 victory Tuesday night over the Greene Co. Tigers The Wildcats won both meetings of the home-and-home series matching the defending 3A and 4A state champions.

Sumter All-State guard Larry Foster led all scorers with 19 points. He was followed by Cameron Ezell with 14, Patrick Delaine with 8, Cordarro Law with 5, Jeremy Brown with 4, Cordarrin Wilson with 2, and Koty Lard with 2.

Greene County was led by Robert Jones, who scored 11. The Tigers’ All-State duo of Howard Crawford and Curtis Nickson each finished with 10, followed by LaKendrick Powell with 8, Quintin McElroy with 4, and Terrell Powell with 2.

Sumter County, now 8-0 on the season, will visit area rival Aliceville Friday while Greene Co. will look to rebound on the road against Livingston.

R.C. Hatch 74, Wilcox Central 57

The Bobcats improved to 11-2 on the season Tuesday with a 17-point home win over 5A Wilcox Central.

Hatch, who repaid the Jaguars for a tournament defeat earlier in the season, trailed 16-14 after one and led by a point, 34-33, at halftime. But the Bobcats would go on to score 40 second half points to coast to victory.

Hatch was led by sophomore Frank Sullivan, who recorded a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Phillip Johnson finished with 18 points, Willie Coleman scored 14, and Calvin Pope added 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The Bobcats’ B team lost their first game of the season, falling by a single point, 48-47. William Cook and Rodney Scott each scored 14 points while Nicholas Johnson added 8.

Hatch will next travel to Livingston Saturday.

MMI 74, Open Door 39

MMI senior guard Jovaris Smith missed Monday’s contest through illness, but it made little difference as the Tigers cruised to their eighth victory of the season.

Kendrick Moore scored 13 points to lead the Tigers, and was joined in double figures by Wendell Crews with 11 and Sam Greene with 10.

Linden 59, Sweet Water 51

The Patriots opened area play with an eight-point road victory over the Bulldogs Monday night.

Gary Williams scored 22 points to lead the Linden effort, followed by Jarrod Chaney with 10, Christopher Martin with 10, Darnell Richardson with 6, Jared Jackson with 4, Wesley Hodges with 4, and Sean Richardson with 2.

Linden’s varsity girls also posted a victory with a 49-19 win, while the Linden junior varsity boys earned a 41-21 victory.

Linden hosts Coffeeville Thursday night while Sweet Water hosts the Sweet Water Holiday Classic Friday and Saturday.

Varsity girls: R.C. Hatch 50, Wilcox Central 48

LaToria Paige capped a 24-point, 9 rebound game with a buzzer-beating layup to earn the Lady Bobcats a thrilling come-from-behind victory Tuesday in Uniontown.

Ahjah Mitchell added 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sheleta Banks chipped in 5 and Ashley Walker 3 for Hatch, which moved to 7-1 on the season.

The Lady Bobcats will play A.L. Johnson Friday.
