MA Junior ‘Horns win two

Marengo Academy’s Junior High Girls and Boys added two more victories to their record on January 5 and 6. On Jan. 5, the Longhorns traveled to Toxey to take on the South Choctaw Academy Rebels.

The Junior High Girls started the night off with the first game. The Lady Longhorns led the Rebels at the end of the first quarter with a score of 11-0. At halftime the Lady Horns were still leading 19-10. The Horns added 15 more points in the third to the Rebels 4, making the score 34-14. The fourth-quarter points were Marengo 4 and South Choctaw 11, making the final score 38-25. This wins gives the Lady Horns a seasonal record of 5-0 and an overall record of 7-0.

Stats for the game are: Tina Allen led in points with 14, followed by Michelle Pritchett and Abbey Huckabee with 8 each, Amber Walker with 4 and Shelby Richardson and Shonna Hammond with 2 each. Rebounding for the Horns were Walker with 6, Huckabee with 2, Allen, Carrie Pope, Casey Edwards and Richardson with 1 each. Allen had 4 steals, Edwards 3, and Huckabee, Jessica Brock and Richardson with 1 each. Anna Edmonds had 2 blocks. Allen and Brock had 1 assist each. Also seeing action were Ciara McIntyre, Shelby Mathis, Nicole Stephens and Shonna Hammond.

The next game of the night was the Junior Boys. The Horns led the Rebels the whole night. The Horns ended the first quarter with 15 points to the Rebels 7. Each team added 8 points in the second quarter making the score 23-15. The Rebels kept the steady pace in the third quarter by adding another 8 while the Horns added 12 points. The fourth quarter the Horns added 6 to the Rebels 5 making the final score 41-28. This wins gives the Horns a seasonal record of 6-0 and an overall record of 7-1.

Stats for the game are: Chris Whitaker led in points with 14, followed by John Carlton with 14, Beau Digmon, Dustin McIntyre and Matt Wallace had 4 each. Rebounding for the Horns were Digmon with 7, Carlton 6, Whitaker 5, McIntyre and Wallace with 2 each, and Trace Stenz, Wood Collins and Michael Martin with 1 each. Whitaker had 5 steals, Digmon with 4, Wallace and Carlton with 2, and Stenz and McIntyre with 1 each. Whitaker had 2 assists while Digmon and Carlton had 1 each. Also seeing action were Weldon Fultz and Brandon Roberts.

On Jan. 6, the Horns hosted the Sumter Academy Eagles. The Junior Lady Horns jumped on the Eagles in the first quarter with a lead of 13-0. The Lady Horns did not stop the stampede and added 18 more points in the second quarter to the Eagles’ 4 making the score 31-4 going into the locker room. The Lady Horns added another 18 points in the third quarter and held the Eagles to no points making the score 49-4. The Horns slowed the pace in the fourth quarter and added only 4 points to the Eagles 6. The final score was 53-10. This gives the Junior Lady Horns a seasonal record of 6-0 and an overall record of 8-0.

Stats for the game are: Tina Allen led the board with 24 points, followed by Michelle Pritchett with 13, Abbey Huckabee with 6, Amber Walker with 4, and Anna Edmonds, Carrie Pope, and Nicole Stephens with 2 each. Edmonds led with 4 rebounds, Huckabee had 3, and Walker and Jessica Brock 2 each. Allen had 7 steals, Walker 4, Pritchett and Huckabee 3 and Edmonds and Brock 1 each. Allen had 2 assists and Pritchett and Walker had 1 assist each. Also seeing action were Ciara McIntyre, Shelby Mathis, Casey Edwards and Shonna Hammond.

The Junior High Boys took to the court and scored 23 points in the first quarter while Sumter scored only 2. The Horns added another 14 points giving them 37 at halftime while the Eagles added 9, giving them 11. The Eagles outscored the Horns 8-7 in the third quarter moving the score to 44-19. The Eagles then added another 9 in the final period while the Horns added 3 making the final score 47-28. This gives the Horns a seasonal record of 7-0 and an overall record of 8-1.

Stats for the game are: Matt Wallace led with 9 points, while John Carlton had 8, Beau Digmon 6, Chris Whitaker and Wood Collins 5, Dustin McIntyre and Michael Martin 4 , Trace Stenz, Weldon Fultz and Brandon Roberts 2 each. Martin led in rebounds with 8, Collins and Wallace had 6 each, Roberts 5, Digmon 3, Matthew Cannon, Whitaker, Fultz, Carlton and Devin Walker 2 each, and Stenz and McIntyre 1 each. Fultz had 7 steals, while Whitaker had 4, Collins 3, Martin and Carlton 2 each, Cannon, McIntyre, and Will Jones 1 each. Carlton had 2 assists and McIntyre and Fultz had 1 each.

The Horns will play Patrician Academy at Patrician on Friday, January 13 starting at 4:00 p.m., West Alabama Prep Monday, January 16 at home starting at 5:00 p.m., and South Choctaw on Tuesday, January 17 at home starting at 4:00 p.m.
