Tigers wins in dramatic fashion

For the second straight game, senior Dustin Roberts ended the contest in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning, as he lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, giving West Alabama a 12-11 come-from-behind victory over William Carey (7-6) on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after an inning, before the Crusaders plated nine runs in the top of the third inning to go in front 9-1. UWA scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, before adding two more in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull within 9-6. William Carey extended the advantage to five with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth before West Alabama began the dramatic comeback.

Roberto Martinez reached on an error to lead off the ninth inning for the Tigers. Pinch runner Damon Brabson advanced to second on a wild pitch, before William Crawford walked. Chris Gilbertsen followed with an infield hit, while pinch hitter Jacob Townsend drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Brabson. Brady Dundon was then hit by a pitch scoring another run for UWA, before Rob Dahlberg pulled West Alabama to within 11-9 on a bases-loaded single through the right side. Clark Humber and Clint Moody were each hit by a pitch, driving in the tying runs, before Roberts lifted a towering fly ball to left field for the game-winning sacrifice fly.

West Alabama plated 12 runs on 10 hits, while committing three errors in the game, as William Carey scored 11 runs on 11 hits, and committed four errors. R.J. Miller (3-1) picked up the win in relief for UWA, throwing one inning,allowing one run on two hits, while striking out two. Shane Martin started for West Alabama and lasted only two innings, giving up six runs on five hits. Brandon Dill pitched five innings for the Tigers, allowing three runs on four hits, to go along with one strikeout.

West Alabama improves to 16-6 on the season and returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Ouachita Baptist for a noon doubleheader. The game cane be heard on 106.5 FM WZNJ (Demopolis).
