The Demopolis High School varsity softball squad took on two different opponents Wednesday and came away with two different results.

In both games, the team played well, but only one game led to a win. The Lady Tigers

In game one, both teams were evenly matched until the Lady Tigers bats came alive in the third. Demopolis struck again in the fourth and fifth innings to take the shutout win.

Demopolis drew first blood after Molly Barnes reached on a fielder’s choice. Barnes moved to second on a similar play and stole third to set the Lady Tigers up for their first score.

Paydirt came in the form of an RBI single by Brandi McGee to give Demopolis a 1-0 lead.

The run would be all Demopolis would need, however, they added insurance runs in the next two innings.

In the fourth, Courtney Willingham started things off with a walk and moved to second on a Stewart Gross sacrifice bunt. A Sara Davis ground out moved Willingham to third before Dorothy Knapp brought her home on an RBI single to make the score 2-0.

There was no need to manufacture a run in the fifth inning. Brandi McGhee took care of things all by her self with a solo homerun to give Demopolis a 3-0 lead and preserve the win.

While the Tigers were scattering runs, Sara Davis was seating Bibb County batters almost as quickly as they came to the plate. Davis finished with only two hits and six strikeouts in the complete game win.

Hillcrest 5 DHS 3

A rested Hillcrest team proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers in game two as they survived a late charge from Demopolis to take a 5-3 win.

Demopolis fell behind early as Hillcrest put up two runs in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Tigers were not able to answer until the top of the fourth when Dorothy Knapp, Molly Barnes and India Chancellor loaded the bases.

Brandi McGhee then took one for the team when she was hit by a pitch to score Barnes.

Hillcrest added another run in their half of the fourth, which the Lady Tigers countered in the fifth.

Hunter Lewis singled to start the inning and moved to second on a Barnes walk. Knapp came through with an RBI double to bring Lewis around and bring Demopolis to within a 3-2 score.

Again Hillcrest stormed out of the gate with two more in the fifth to make it a 5-2 game.

The Lady Tigers were well on their way to a rally in the seventh, but a combination of strong pitching and heads up fielding preserved the win for Hillcrest.

After reaching base on a fielder’s choice and and moving to second on a Lewis single, Davis was in great position to break into the Hillcrest lead. A fielding error by Hillcrest gave Davis all the room she needed to cross the plate and make the score 5-3.

Unfortunately, Hillcrest managed to make the plays the rest of the way and preserve the win.

Demopolis will be in action again today at Choctaw County. The first game is set for 4:30 p.m.
