A special night under the stars

For the first time ever, Demopolis High School students will have their annual prom off school grounds and they didn’t spare the opportunity to pitch their tent on the Gaineswood lawn -literally.

Tonight a lit walking path will lead the way to the moment many DHS juniors and seniors have been awaiting all year.

The motto for the night is “In this Moment” and this year’s students will have the chance to create many moments that no other class in the school’s history has done before.

“This year we wanted to do something different to try and encourage more participation,” DHS teacher and prom sponsor Amie Attaway said. “A lot of students just wanted to do something different than the school gym.”

After heading DHS’ prom festivities for the past four years, Attaway admits she has fun participating in such a momentous event in her students’ lives and seems just as excited as they are.

“They will take their pictures in the gazebo,” she said as she pointed to the home’s outdoor d/cor.

Although Attaway described the decorations as simple, classy and elegant with white linen tablecloths, candelabras and flowers, approximately 30 DHS juniors left their classrooms to decorate for the big night.

In between laughing at the choice to be in class or having fun with your friends decorating, Joseph Seale said he and his classmates were just “dedicated to the prom,” and Molly Coplind added they want their first off-campus prom to look good.

“This is one of those things that you don’t just trust anyone to do,” Stewart Gwin said,

“and you’d rather do it yourself to make sure it was done right.”
