A shooting Friday night at an RV park on the western side of Demopolis has been ruled an apparent suicide by Demopolis police investigators.

Around 9 p.m. Friday, Dempolis police responded to a reported shooting in the 1600 block of U.S. Highway 80.

According to a release from Director of Public Safety Jeff Manuel, a 44-year-old Lexington woman who witnesses said had threatened to commit suicide was found with a gunshot wound to the face.

“Upon arrival, officers were told that (she) had threatened to commit suicide and it was thought that she

had,” according to the press release.

After entering the recreational vehicle, Manuel said, officers found the woman dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The death, Manuel said, has not yet been officially ruled a suicide, but that is the investigators’ opinion after examining the scene and speaking to witnesses.

The case is still under investigation by the Demopolis Police Department and by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Forensic Sciences, Manuel said, will give the official word on the nature of the woman’s death.
