Judson holds back St. Joseph 69-67

MARION &045; Hale County’s Kendra Ferguson calmly sank two free throw with four seconds left in a tie game to give the Judson Eagles a 60-67 win over the St Joseph Lady Bears. It was Judson’s second win of the season.

St. Joseph was hitting shots in the first half putting up 40 points to take a 40-33 half time lead.

The Eagle defense came to life in the second half, shutting down the team from Brooklyn, N.Y., while scoring the first six points of the half with the help of freshman Allison Thomas’ three-pointer to come within one. St Joseph got things going by coming back to pump in 10 straight points to build a 49-39 lead with the clock reading 13:29.

Judson defense went to work again holding the Lady Bears to three points the next four minutes of the game. In those four minutes senior Anna Billingham would drop in seven straight points for the Eagles, including a three-point play to get her team within two. Judson would tie and go on top, 52-50 on Mia Allison’s put back with 10 minutes left in the game. The Lady Bears would score a field goal, but Allison would follow sinking two free throws. A three-pointer by Ferguson with less than seven minutes to play would give the Eagles a 59-54 advantage and they went up by as much as eight points in the next minute.

St. Joseph went on a 10-3 run to get within one point, 65-64 with just 1:23 on the game clock. On their next possession, Allison would drive the length of the court for a lay up with a minute left to play. Lady Bears worked their way to get a triple form the corner to tie the game at 67 with 12 seconds to go.

Coach Jones would call a time out to design a play. Ferguson would work the ball to the fore court and drives to the basket where she is fouled attempting a shot.

Allison led all scorers with 21 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds and had four steals. Billingham also recorded a double-double. She netted 20 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, got six steals, and had five assists. Thomas added 13 points. Judson will go at it again tonight, but on the road at Tennessee Temple.
