Eleanor Inez Ernest Cooper

THOMASTON &045; Eleanor Inez Ernest Cooper, 89, of Thomaston died on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Funeral services were held at Thomaston Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007 with the Rev. Randall Mims officiating. Burial followed in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Vineland.

She was the former seamstress with Vanity Fair Mills in Demopolis. She attended Thomaston Baptist Church.

Her husband, Willie Grady Cooper and her daughter, Shirley Janette Cooper, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Willie Rex Cooper of Marbury; her daughter, Beverly Dean Wilson of Moody; two brothers, Rube Smyly Jr. of Thomasville and Peyton Smyly of Linden; her sister, Earline Copeland of Selma; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Rex Cooper Jr., Jonathan Wilson, Mike Ernest, Dan Kerr, Payton Smyly Jr. and Joe Wilson.

O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Linden was in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. Joseph Prett Calhoun

MOBILE &045; The Rev. Joseph Prett Calhoun, 76, of Mobile died. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Baptist Church in Mobile.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the U.S. Korean War. He was the oldest and longest pastor that served on the Bethel Baptist Association. He served as assistant pastor of St. Joseph Baptist Church in Mobile, pastor of Bells Chapel Baptist Church, pastor of the New Mount Mariah Church Baptist Church in Lower Peachtree and pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in Sweet Water for 41 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Willard Calhoun Sr. and Annie Bell Jones Calhoun; two brothers, C.D. Calhoun and the Rev. Williard Calhoun Jr.; one sister, Adline Calhoun.

He is survived by his wife, Josie Lee Calhoun of Mobile; five children, Lorenzo McCaskill of Dickerson, Bessie Henderson of Mobile, Cheryle Castleberry and Jan Parker, both of Jacksonville, Fla. and Joseph Prett Calhoun Jr. of Germany; seven step-children; three brothers, the Rev. Samuel L. Calhoun Sr. of Linden, Robert S. Calhoun and Robert L. Calhoun of Dickerson; five sisters, Mary Lee Henderson of Dickerson, Bessie M. Phillips, Willie B. White of Thomasville and Mattie B. Jackson of Mobile; 39 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
