BOE receives state audit, good report

LINDEN &045; The Marengo School System Board of Education received its 2005-2006 state audit for the system at a board meeting yesterday.
Pursuant to state statute the auditors from the state came before the board to present the findings of their audits, which spanned from Oct. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2006. The three-person team of auditors, constituting of Ashley Page, Emily Owens and Shane Martin, was represented by Page, who spoke to the board about the audit results that looked at the financial statements from the system and how state money given to system was utilized.
Page said, however there were several minor practices found on the individual school levels that were found during the audit. She said though they were slight, the matters had to be included in the audit results presented to the board.
Page said the audit also found that improper receipt practices were used at athletic events held at Sweet Water and John Essex, though none of the mistakes resulted in any mismanagement or loss of funds. She said the audit also notes that the administration of the system has already taken step to remedy the problems.
Page said it is common in such audits that even if the financial material is correct for the system things will be found at the local level and that the system received a good audit.
In other business:
-The board rejected the bids it received for toilet projects at John Essex and Sweet Water. One of the bids for the project was $310,000, which Hallmark said was higher than the system had anticipated.
-Prior to approving the textbook adoptions for Spanish, the board hear several remarks from Hallmark about the progress of the language class within the system.
-In new business members of the board approved the financial reports for the system for the month of February, bank statements for the reconciliations for February and the superintendent’s recommendation to rescind the Jan. 31 meeting of the board.
-The board also approved several revised files that had previously come before it and approved a new file.
